In this case, there may not be a model by which to measure scaffold design. Thus, to begin developing scaffolds for functional soft tissue engineering, we must first develop design targets based on natural soft tissue constitutive models. From here, we must be able to design the pore architecture of scaffolds made of known nonlinear elastic material and predict their effective nonlinear elastic and deformation dependent mass transport properties. These designs must be fabricated reproducibly and their mechanical and mass transport properties measured and compared with the design targets of natural tissue effective properties.
While previous tissue strain energy functions have been proposed to capture the wide range of tissue behavior, the existence of multiple strain energy functions makes it difficult to develop consistent scaffold mechanical design targets. Therefore, we have proposed a modification of a commonly used anisotropic strain energy function proposed by Holzapfel that incorporates the widely used Ogden strain energy function with the anisotropic components given by Holzapfel as a design target for soft tissue nonlinear elastic behavior.
