Introduction Knowledge is one of the most important competitive resources a business can have. This has been repetitively emphasized in the literature of knowledge management, strategic management, and organization science (Argote & Ingram, 2000; Davenport & Prusak, 1997; Ipe, 2003;). A constant finding is that in order to effectively maintain this advantage for long-term development and survival, an organization must rely on its employees, the real creators, and users, to effectively share knowledge and thereby enhance the collective innovative capability of the organization (Argote, McEvily, & Reagans, 2003; Bechky, 2003; Cabrera & Cabrera, 2002; Kelloway & Barling, 2000).
The detailed presentation of formal and informal organizational structures, motivating factors, and communication channels used in the knowing process offers a systematic model for investigating knowledge sharing in an organizational context. Although the importance of institutional environment, organizational factors and informal organization have been stressed in previous research, this chapter is among the first attempts to systematically detail organizational factors that influence human information behavior and knowledge-sharing activity, where Organizational initiatives (formal and informal)--- Communication channels (formal and informal)--- and Motivating factors (formal and informal) for individuals’ commitment are related in investigating individuals’ sharing behavior.
While the informal organization and norms offer the possibility of knowledge generation and information communication necessity (Ipe, 2003), the socialization process is where these information and knowledge are communicated efficiently among organizational members and carried over through generations (Zucker, 1977). According to Van Maanen and Schein (1979), what people learn about their work roles and organizational environment is often a direct result of how they learn it. Organizational socialization is such a process whereby an individual acquires both social and task-related knowledge and the skills necessary to assume an organizational role (Blankenship, 1980).
