Cut a third muslin heart, 1⁄2'' larger than the cutting line. Proceed to fill in with crazy quilting. Assembly for Pillow: 1. Pin the lace or fabric ruffle in place, then baste by machine or hand onto the front of the finished piece. Pin the ruffle down so it stays in out of the way. 2. Lay the backing face down onto the ruffled crazy quilt piece. Pin together. Sew a 1⁄4'' seam, leaving a 31⁄2'' opening for the heart pillow insert. Remove pins, turn right side out and then remove the ruffle pins.
Now fold the fabric over the belting so that it meets at the center. Whipstitch the fabric edges together by folding one edge over the other. Do not sew through the belting. Finish out to both ends. 5. Machine top stitch through all layers at both edges and the center. Add additional topstitching as desired. Matching thread for top stitching l 1⁄4 to 1 yard belting or buckram (21⁄2'' wide) 1. Make two hearts as described on page 46. 2. Measure your waist. Cut the stiff belting 5'' shorter than the waist measurement.
To make the tea solution, boil a kettle of water with four tea bags in it for 15 minutes. Strain the solution and return it to simmer. Then put the lace into the simmering tea. When the lace has simmered for 15 minutes, take it out and put it in a setting solution of 1⁄2 cup white vinegar to three cups of water. Let it set for 15 minutes, then rinse it thoroughly and press. Coffee I use instant coffee and boiling water to create an antique patina on lace, fabric and ribbons. The more teaspoons of coffee you use, the darker the effect.
