Our environment fit nicely with the fairy-tale world depicted in the children’s books we were reading—a world inhabited by Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, and Frog Prince.

After exploring every cave on the hill, we returned to our parents, soaked with sweat, asking for drinks and food. We also went to see Beijing operas, stage plays, and movies. We saw lots of foreign movies. ” We also ate out a lot. Whenever we went out, I would get excited and cheer, “We are going out to eat! ” But there was another side to our family life. The women and their children simply continued to live in the old family home. His first wife thought that even after divorce she was still his woman, so she made up a bed for him in her bedroom. But my uncle moved his bedding to another room, leaving my aunt crying quietly by herself.
