It also means more than put-downs because it makes a powerful statement about the self-esteem of the person doing it.

Gender The research evidence to date indicates that women laugh more than men in response to humor (Bogaers, 1993; Brodzinsky, Barnet, & Aiello, 1981; Cantor; 1970; Dreher, 1982; Easton, 1994; Hay, 2001; Makri-Tsilipakou, 1994; Provine, 2000).
