As they grew in wealth and economic security, middle-class families were able to engage in greater consumption. Their modes of consumption, however, were shaped by the ideals associated with the Evangelical revival. The ideals, amongst other things, stated that a truly religious life required the separation of the home from the business world. They also stated that women were naturally more religious than men, and had a special duty to maintain the spiritual purity of the home.
The biographer is not expected to count the number of hairs on the subject's ears, or dwell on the subject's manner of walking, or spend pages describing the subject's eating habits, unless it so happens that these matters influence the political decisions made by the subject or the attitudes and actions of other actors towards the subject. What we need, then, is something equivalent to these 'forms' and practices of' old' history. If we had them, then we would know what the ground rules were for making acceptable breaches of the inclusionist convention.
